Police continue investigation into city-wide vehicle arson
On Monday night, a number of cars were set on fire in several locations across Berlin. Police are addressing all the incidents as cases of arson.
The first fire broke out in Mitte on Fischerinsel at around 23:10, where two men were seen standing alongside a car, with a third nearby. According to police, there was a sudden loud bang and a fire broke out inside the vehicle. The trio then fled. Police arrested a 22-year-old, who, according to his own statement, had been near the vehicle at the time of the fire. The man was taken to hospital for burns on his body, and has since been released from police custody.
A short time later, a parked car was set on fire on Maxie-Wander-Strasse in Hellersdorf. This wasn’t the only fire in the area that night however. A resident on Grottkauer Strasse was woken up by a loud bang and saw flames engulfing a parked car before quickly alerting the fire brigade.
Over in Neukölln, a car was completely destroyed by a fire on Kiehlufer Street, although luckily no one was injured.
