Police investigate mysterious attack on Deutsche Bahn office

Thursday 27, July

Early this morning, an unknown group carried out an attack on the Deutsche Bahn office on Caroline-Michaels-Straße, smashing several panes of glass and setting fire to two nearby vehicles.

The culprits spray painted the words “Stop Tren Maya” on the window of the building. The motive behind this defacement seems to be related to Deutsche Bahn’s involvement in a new railway line project in Mexico called Tren Maya.

In an attempt to impede the response of emergency services, the perpetrators laid out caltrops (small, sharp objects with four points, designed to puncture tires and slow down vehicles), making it difficult for the fire brigade and police to reach the DB office. Authorities are actively pursuing the culprits.

In May 2021, Deutsche Bahn announced their participation in the development of the railway line Tren Maya. This intercity train line, which is set to stretch 950 miles around the Yucatan Peninsula, is expected to be a massive tourism booster for the region. However, its construction has been criticised as it has resulted in huge swathes of rainforest being cleared.
