Police detonate explosives in local park, suspect still on the run
Thursday, 31 October
If you were in Neukölln yesterday afternoon, you might have noticed some unexpected commotion. An unidentified man carrying explosives caused a major police operation centered around Neukölln S-Bahn station.
According to police sources, officers approached the man for a routine ID check. He immediately ran across the tracks, leaving behind a bag the agents found suspicious. After a further search the bag was found to contain explosives.
The police moved the suspicious materials to nearby Thomashöhe Park. They cordoned off the area, and firefighters dug a hole to safely detonate the explosives around 8 p.m. Residents reported hearing the blast from several blocks away.
Authorities assured that there was no danger to the public during the operation. The suspect is still at large, and Berlin police have taken over the investigation from the federal officers.
As of now, the reasons behind the incident remain unclear. While there’s no evidence pointing to a politically motivated attack, state security officials are involved to cover all bases.
