Police accidentally discover explosives in Berlin-Weißensee apartment

While searching an apartment in Weißensee for stolen goods on Tuesday, police made a chance discovery.  A small amount of explosives were uncovered in the home of a 40-year-old man on Smetanastrasse.

Some 200 people living in the area had to be temporarily evacuated, and the explosives were safely detonated by specialists from the State Criminal Police Office.

The resident of the apartment was taken into custody and, according to a spokesperson for the Berlin public prosecutor’s office, he’s believed to be part of the far-left political movement Antifa.

Police were searching the apartment during an investigation into the resident’s alleged role in a robbery in Kreuzberg on July 25, which involved an altercation with two Youtube influencers from the right-wing extremist Querdenker movement.
