Platform change: BVG leaves X after 13 years

They were funny, they were annoying, they occasionally gave useful transportation information, but now it’s over. Thirteen years after joining the platform X (formerly Twitter) the BVG has now decided that it will no longer make use of the social media channel through which they reached more than 400,000 people.

In an announcement issued yesterday, the company wrote “End of the line: We are leaving X”, adding that the the “communicative environment” no longer suits the values of the company. With that statement, all six of the official channels of the BVG have been marked as inactive. This is not the end of the company’s use of social media, though. They will continue to provide information on LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok.

The move is believed to be a response to the perceived increased toxicity of the platform after the chaotic restructuring that accompanied Elon Musk’s takeover. Since then content moderation was relaxed, blocked accounts were reactivated, there’s been a exodus of advertisers and – just last Friday – the European Union announced that the company is set to face heavy fines for deceiving its users in the implementation of white and blue checks to verify accounts.
