Warehouse fire in Marzahn: Fire brigade warns residents

Early on Thursday morning, a paper warehouse in Marzahn burned completely to the ground, sending black smoke billowing into the skies and causing the Berlin fire bridge to issue a warning for people in the area to keep their windows closed.

The 5,000 square metre warehouse, located on Wolfener Straße, contained ethanol, paper and machine components. As these burn, they produce a toxic cloud of black smoke which is visible for quite some distance. A fire department spokesperson commented: “If windows are kept closed, there is no direct threat to the surrounding population.” Since the warehouse was in an industrial area, not too many people are believed to be at risk and so far nobody has been injured.

The fire brigade worked through the early hours of Thursday morning using water and foam to prevent the spread of the fire. The exact cause of the blaze remains unknown at this time.
