Several injured at Gaza demonstration, rescue helicopter deployed
More than 20 people were injured and 26 arrested at a pro-Palestinian demonstration on Saturday. Videos shared on social media appear to show heavy-handed police tactics, with demonstrators suffering serious injuries. One person had their nose broken, another was knocked-out by police. In total, four demonstrators were hospitalised, with some even requiring emergency transportation via rescue helicopter. Police reported that 17 of their officers suffered injuries.
The protest travelled from Steglitz to Schöneberg, drawing up to 1,100 people out onto the streets on Saturday afternoon.
Police justified their tactics, claiming that the demonstrators had masked themselves with keffiyehs, chanted “criminally relevant slogans”, thrown bottles or kicked at police officers, or even “hindered rescue efforts” to resuscitate the demonstrator who had lost consciousness.
In total, 28 criminal charges were filed, including indictments for resisting arrest, bodily harm, breach of the peach and incitement to violence.
