Online anmeldung: Berlin finally allows digital address registration

Anyone who has moved to Berlin is familiar with the struggle of successfully landing an appointment at the Bürgeramt in time to meet the two week deadline. The newly introduced registration process, however, is going to change things. Online registration will become available from Wednesday this week. Could this mean Berlin is finally entering the digital age?

Berlin’s Mayor, Kai Wegner (CDU), will officially launch the service at the Smart Country Innovation trade fair on Wednesday morning, according to the Berlin Senate.

With over 500,000 applications each year, registering a new apartment is one of the most frequently-used administrative services offered by the state of Berlin. But as any Berliner knows, the most difficult part of the process is the first step: securing an appointment.

This new online service is free of charge and only requires a user account and an online ID card (providing these are as simple to obtain as the anmeldung itself now).

But, if you’re a glutton for punishment, regular appointments at the Bürgeramt will still be possible.
