Nollendorfplatz U-Bahn to close for four months

It is the most significant restriction to Berlin’s underground network in decades. New tests have shown that the ceiling at Nollendorfplatz U-Bahn station is deteriorating badly, and from January 2026 it will need to close for four months.

This will cause major disruption, as Nollendorfplatz is the only station in Berlin where four separate underground lines intersect: the U1, U2, U3, and U4 all stop there – and three of these four lines will be completely suspended during the repair works.

During the construction period, the U1, U3, and U4 will have disrupted service; only the above-ground U2 line will run normally.

The closure is due to the rapid deterioration of the tunnel ceiling. Some weeks ago, the BVG imposed a reduced speed limit of 15 km/h for all trains passing through the station and installed steel supports and wooden beams to reinforce the structure. However, this has not halted the ongoing structural failure. Back in 2021, the BVG gave the ceiling of the U1 line a condition grade of 3.2 – considered “satisfactory” – but the situation has worsened since. From a grade of 4.0 onwards, a tunnel or bridge must be closed immediately due to risk of collapse.

The BVG is now actively seeking a company to carry out the work, scheduled to take place from January to April. During this time, train service will be “completely suspended” at Nollendorfplatz.
