Due to the fast, freezing rain this morning, workers at BER were unable to de-ice the aircrafts, making all flights grounded. Only affecting take-offs, planes could still land on the runway, so arrivals are not impacted.
The first flights have started to take off again, but not all. It is not yet clear how long these issues will last passengers must expect flight cancellations and massive delays. The airport asks passengers to check the flight status with the airlines.
This is happening amongst other transport delays and cancellations in Berlin. The U2 is not running between Wittenbergplatz and S+U Potsdamer Platz, as well as between Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz and S+U Pankow, due to the ice and snow.
Similarly, the U3 does is not running between Warschauer Straße and Gleisdreieck as well as between Krumme Lanke and Breitenbachplatz. Replacement buses are sometimes available, and travellers can check the BVG website and app for updates. The S-Bahn and Deutsche Bahn are also facing delays.
These transport issues follow a long week of transport chaos when trams came to a standstill, then travelled empty around the city and multiple trains faced delays. In good news, they’re still not using salt on the sidewalks – so the ice-sliding fun continues!
