New study shows Berlin drivers spent two and a half days in traffic last year

Road congestion in the Berlin city centre increased significantly in 2024, with drivers spending an average of 58 hours waiting in traffic. Research released by mobility service provider Inrix on Tuesday shows an average three-hour increase on 2023’s data.

Over the last year, massive jams on Amrumer Straße in Wedding, Karl-Marx Straße in Neukölln, Suermonstraße in Hohenschönhausen and on Tempelhofer Damm have become a regular occurrence.
“Traffic congestion increased more in German cities than in cities in the USA and the UK,” announced the Inrix team.

Even so, drivers elsewhere in the world seem to have it much worse. Istanbul leads the international ranking of the Inrix Global Traffic Scorecard 2024. Drivers there spent an average of 105 hours in traffic jams last year. In second place is the previous year’s record holder, New York City, with 102 hours. London took fourth place with 101 hours. In fifth place is Mexico City with 97 hours.
