Measles outbreak confirmed at Tegel refugee housing

A vaccination campaign against measles has been rolled out at the Tegel refugee housing after a case was confirmed over the weekend, as reported by Berliner Zeitung.

According to an announcement made by the State Office for Refugee Affairs (LAF) on Saturday, three other people from the same accommodation hall have also shown symptoms. Diagnosed cases have now been separated from other residents.

The affected hall, which is home to 699 individuals from Ukraine, has been quarantined along with two other residential halls and a common area. The German Red Cross has been able to procure 400 doses of vaccine, and there is apparently a high willingness to be vaccinated among residents of the refugee centre.

Measles is such a highly contagious disease that a vaccination rate of at least 95% is considered necessary to prevent its spread. However according to the Federal Ministry of Health, Germany has not reached this minimum requirement, which means that outbreaks of measles continue to occur.
