Doctor from Charité hospital goes missing in Italy

The 58-year-old doctor has been missing for almost a month. The last confirmed sighting of the Berlin doctor Marcus Maurer occurred at 7am on July 31, when he left his holiday home in San Bartolomeo, just on Swiss border, and set out to go hiking on Monte Giove, a mountain of 1300 metres on the northwestern shore of Lake Maggiore.

According to his wife, he should have come back later that afternoon. When he failed to return, she called the police – and they immediately carried out search and rescue missions lasting four days. Mountain rescue team and alpine specialists searched the area extensively, even bringing in helicopters with thermal imaging cameras. But all to no avail. There was been no sighting of the doctor who was employed at Berlin’s prestigious Charité hospital.

The man’s family are now appealing for more information on social media, offering a reward of €3,000 for any information that leads to his discovery.
