A man was killed yesterday by a falling flowerpot in Gesundbrunnen, Mitte. Initial police investigations have ruled it a tragic accident.
The incident occurred at Vinetaplatz, not far from Mauerpark. While the background of the accident remains unclear, B.Z. reported that strong winds might have torn the flowerpot out of its anchoring on a nearby balcony.
The police and fire brigade were alerted at around 3:15 pm to an accident, and a rescue helicopter was also used. They tried to help the man, but he had died on the spot. “The person had a very serious head injury,” said a spokesman for the Berlin fire brigade.
The German Weather Service (DWD) had predicted wind gusts for Berlin and Brandenburg on Monday. The windy weather had caused fatalities in Schleswig-Holstein, where three people died on Easter Sunday while hunting Easter eggs when a tree fell during strong gusts.
