Last Generation stage protest against LNG summit
On Monday, activists from Letzte Generation (Last Generation) transformed Berlin’s famed Hotel Adlon by colouring the entryway fountain green. They also hung a massive banner along the building’s façade to protest the upcoming World LNG Summit, set to take place there in December.
The activists, who booked a room on the top floor specifically for this action, chanted slogans like “Clean Gas? Dirty Lie!” while condemning the “greenwashing of the fossil gas industry and German politics,” according to statements.
The Adlon quickly shut down the protest, with spokesperson Tanja Freytag noting, “The entire incident was over within minutes.” Security acted swiftly to remove the multi-story banner, which Freytag added had posed a “safety risk” to hotel guests and passersby.
Freytag also confirmed that, as dramatic as the protest looked, the green coloring in the fountain was non-toxic and the clean up was fast. “This wasn’t our first protest,” she said. “We were prepared and could respond quickly.”
The December summit has already drawn attention from climate activists, and with groups pledging to protest, Berlin’s most iconic hotel is likely to remain in the climate spotlight this winter.
