Last Generation begins a new wave of protests in Berlin
The climate action group Last Generation has just kicked off a new phase of ‘action weeks’, with around 200 protesters demonstrating across the city centre. They’re calling for Germany to stop using fossil fuels by 2030, a full 15 years earlier than the federal government plans to.
Accompanied by police, yesterday’s demonstration started in Moabit and made its way to Europaplatz in front of Hauptbahnhof, holding up traffic along the way. At the end of the march, participants adorned themselves with Olaf Scholz masks and started pushing around fellow protesters who were pretending to be part of a climate expert council. Last Generation says this was intended to underline how “incredibly disrespectful” the Chancellor is to voices in the scientific community.
When police asked the protesters to move along, they continued to block the street. After three attempts to clear the square, officers intervened and carried the climate activists away. A spokesperson said that around 120 police officers were on site.
Last Generation has also written an open letter to Olaf Scholz, calling for him to stop “shirking his responsibility”, and to make comprehensive steps to combat climate change. You can expect more protests from Last Generation and Fridays for Future this month.
