IT problems continue at BER airport following cyber attack

The situation is far from normal, but it remains under control. BER airport has never been especially renowned for crisis management, yet matters became significantly more complicated last weekend when the city was hit by a cyber attack. Three other European airports – London, Brussels and Dublin – were also affected.

At BER, the attack disabled check-in systems and severely disrupted baggage handling. The resulting IT failures are still unresolved. Nevertheless, operations are gradually improving: the airport has begun to clear its luggage backlog, with support from the fire department.

Tuesday brought a calmer atmosphere compared to Monday, when heavy delays and lengthy queues followed the influx of marathon travellers. “Yesterday, we had 89,000 passengers,” a spokesperson told rbb, “today, there are 79,000.”

The cyber attack targeted IT service provider Collins Aerospace. Hackers paralysed electronic systems using ransomware – a type of malware that encrypts data and locks systems until a ransom is paid.
