Berlin to host Olympics marking 100 year anniversary of Nazi games?
The 2036 games would mark 100 years since the last time the Olympics were held in Berlin
Should Berlin apply to host the Olympic games in 2036? Germany’s Minister for the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) is in favour, stating that she would promote the idea “very strongly”. She noted that the games must be democratic and sustainable and that “an Olympic application would be the right signal for sport in Berlin”. The concept would be pretty tricky, considering that the 2036 games would mark 100 years since the last time the Olympics were held in Berlin, an event exploited for propaganda purposes by the Nazi party and attended by Adolf Hitler.
The host cities for the next three Olympic Games have already been determined. They will be held in Paris (2024), Los Angeles (2028) and Brisbane (2032), but the 2036 host remains undecided. Friedhard Teuffel, Director of the State Sports Association, commented that if Berlin were to host the games, they would need to showcase Germany’s “democratic and sustainable” values, adding that they should not require the construction of any new sports facilities.

Previously, the idea of a joint bid between Berlin and Tel Aviv had been discussed as a way to mark the dark history of the 100 year anniversary of the 1936 games, though its not clear if that idea is still under consideration.
