Homeless man killed in garbage truck accident in Mitte
A tragic accident occurred early on Monday morning in Berlin-Mitte when a homeless man was fatally injured after being dumped into a garbage truck.
The victim, a 33-year-old homeless man, had spent the night sleeping in a paper and cardboard container on Rosenstraße near Hackescher Markt. At around 07:00, city workers arrived to empty the container. As they did, the man fell into the garbage truck.
According to a fire brigade spokesperson, the workers heard his cries for help but were unable to stop him from becoming trapped in the truck’s compactor.
Emergency crews were called and attempted to rescue him by cutting holes in the vehicle. Unfortunately, their efforts came too late. The truck was taken to a recycling centre, where the man’s body was recovered.
The two drivers of the garbage truck were taken to hospital in shock. Authorities have launched a criminal investigation into the incident.
