The Sri Ganesha Hindu Temple in Neukölln officially opened its doors today after 20 years of planning and construction. The largest Hindu temple in Germany and one of the largest in Europe is named after the elephant-headed god Ganesha, who represents wisdom and energy. The building’s construction cost €1.1 million and was financed by donations.

The first three days of the five-day opening ceremony, from today until Friday, will see the ceremonial inauguration involving traditional consecration rituals performed by priests and Sthapathis. During this time, public entry is restricted. On Saturday and Sunday, everyone may come and visit the temple, receive blessings and participate in celebrations and select rituals. As part of the inauguration process, water from the Ganges and Spree rivers will be poured on the temple’s colourful tower on Sunday morning.

Various members of the Bundestag and the Berlin Senate are expected to attend the opening ceremonies alongside prominent figures from India and many Indian Berliners. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the temple together with Chancellor Friedrich Merz in October, as the two celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations between Germany and India.
