Danger of collapse: Police order evacuation of apartment building in Schöneberg

Residents have been evacuated at short notice from their homes in a Schöneberg apartment block after a structural engineer identified the building as being at risk of collapse, as reported by Berliner Morgenpost. Families from 9 apartments have been evacuated from the building, which is located on Grunewaldstraße. Part of the street between Hauptstraße and Goltzstraße has been closed off for safety reasons.

The property company Heimstaden Germany GmbH, which owns the building, said the evacuated families will be set up in alternative accommodation if they are not able to stay with friends or family. “Unfortunately, it is currently not possible to specify … how long the apartments cannot be used,” said a representative of the company.

Heimstaden has also stated that structural problems with the building have been known for a long time, although their causes have not yet been clarified. The company said that they have regularly been monitoring visible cracks in the structure since December 2023.

But Eva Majewski (CDU), District Councillor for the area, has shared her shock about how long Heimstaden has apparently known about the problem. “This is the first time I’ve heard that this has been known about for years,” she said on the RBB evening broadcast.
