Over the Easter weekend, activists dressed as Easter bunnies distributed keys for the gates of Görlitzer Park to protest its nightly closure. Since the beginning of March, after years of dispute, Görlitzer Park has been closed every evening. The Senate claims the closure has been done to curb drug trafficking and crime in the park.
The self-proclaimed “Union of Easter Bunnies” distributed chocolate bunnies, along with what they called “Görli keys” to visitors to the park on Sunday. An Instagram video showed two people with rabbit masks giving out chocolate figures, each wearing a key around their necks. A rbb reporter confirmed that at least one of the distributed key fits into a lock, even though many of the locks are glued or destroyed.
The activists made the following statement: “Easter bunnies are not enthusiastic about the new fence because it makes it difficult to hide Easter eggs. That’s why we had a surprise with us on Easter Sunday and distributed chocolate bunnies with Görli keys to park visitors so that finally all humans and animals have access to the Görli at any time.”
According to the Senate Environment Administration that initiated the nightly closure, the gates do not yet have security locks at gates, which is why they are using such simple and replicable keys. According to spokeswoman Petra Nelken, security locks will not be installed until the construction work is fully completed.
