Germany slips down expat ranking for being “unfriendly” and “complicated”
Thursday 17, August
Germans are unfriendly, the bureaucracy is annoying and the language is difficult to learn. That’s according to a recent survey conducted by the Inter Nation network among foreign students and employees in various countries, as reported by rbb.
Expats and skilled workers from across the world chose Germany as one of the least attractive locations
In the survey, expats and skilled workers from across the world chose Germany as one of the least attractive locations, ranking a dismal 49th place out of 53. The main reasons for this lie in the interpersonal sphere. Many respondents said that they found it difficult to settle into German society, and the majority of participants perceive the German population as unfriendly (ranking among the five least friendly domestic populations, to be exact).
On a positive note, Germany did well in the employment index, with job security and the labour market ranking 5th and 4th place respectively. When it comes to overall quality of life, expats rated Germany at 18th place, mentioning among other things, an appreciation for the availability of environmentally friendly goods and services.
More than 12,000 people took part in the so-called “Expat Insider Study”, making it one of the largest surveys on the subject of living and working abroad. It provides insights into the life of expats in 53 countries worldwide and provides detailed information on their satisfaction with everything from overall quality of life, to settling in, and personal finances.
