Chancellor Olaf Scholz posted a photo on Twitter yesterday sporting a bold new accessory: an eye patch. The tweet quickly racked up thousands of likes and comments after it was posted and (in case you needed any more proof that internet culture is on its last legs) the German Chancellor added that he was “excited for the memes”.

Germany’s private army of social media managers dutifully fired up their MacBooks, but the resulting memes were not particularly inspired. Some bright minds noticed that eyepatches are worn by pirates, while the number one comment was from Deutsche Telekom who used it as an opportunity to push their MagentaTV (never heard of it either).

As for how he sustained the injury, Scholz apparently fell while on a jog near his home in Potsdam over the weekend, suffering abrasions on his chin, nose and eye. He says that it “looks worse than it is”, and will be working as usual this week, including a speech in parliament on Wednesday.
