Money may not grow on trees, but the Cherry Blossom Festival at Gärten der Welt appears to have brought in a substantial sum for two armed robbers who broke into the park’s administrative and service area on Eisenacher Straße at around 1:20am last night.

BZ newspaper was the first to report that a pair of perpetrators dressed in all black and wearing balaclavas forced entry onto the premises and injured two security guards present on site. Armed with a pistol and a crowbar, they obtained keys for the safe from the guards, snatched a six-figure sum and fled on foot along Eisenacher Straße in the direction of Helle Mitte.

They guards, who were taken to hospital following the incident, described them as 1.70 to 1.80 meters tall, of slim to average build and speaking German with a Russian accent.

The criminal police of Directorate 3 have taken over the investigation and are looking for witnesses who can provide more information about the event.
