Gang rape in Görlitzer Park: Mayor to hold summit on park security

It has long been known as a crime hotspot, but new attention is being paid to security in Berlin’s Görlitzer Park following a shocking incident. The facts are horrible. In the early hours of the morning on June 21, a 27-year old woman was raped by multiple perpetrators in the park. Her boyfriend of the same age was assaulted and robbed. Apparently, it is the eighth sexual assault this year and eleven rapes have been reported in the immediate vicinity between July 2022 and June 2023. The CDU and SPD led government have now announced their intention to act.

“The situation in Görlitzer Park is unacceptable” said Berlin mayor Kai Wegner according to reporting from the Tagespiegel. He wants to talk about how “we can increase security.”

It has now been announced that the park would be the subject of a special summit on security to be held in early September. These discussions will involve the police, the fire brigade as well as officers from Germany’s domestic intelligence agency, the Verfassungsschutz. Some measures already suggested include permanent video-surveillance, mobile police stations and closing the park at night.
