Berlin is making the world’s biggest fruit salad

How to you make the biggest fruit salad in the world? Take four tons of apples, four tons of watermelons, four tons of pineapple, four tons of grapes (half light, half dark) and one ton of blueberries; pluck, wash, and chop them up and then: voila!

This was the recipe announced by Nils Doerwald, chairman of the Berlin Fruchthof on Beusselstrasse, on Wednesday. The industrial marketplace are holding a celebration for their 75th anniversary on September 15 at which they will open their doors to the general public from 10:00 to 18:00. 5,000 visitors are expected.

Apparently, a key decision in the planning this world record attempt was whether or not to include bananas. One the one hand, the soft tropical fruit would add much-needed weight, but it would come at the cost of making the entire bowl too mushy and it would likely turn brown.

After the fruit is processed, the record breaking salad is expected to weigh 10,750 kilograms, around 400 kilograms above the previous record. Any uneaten food will be donated to a local food bank network.

In case you want to join the effort, the Fruchthof are actively seeking volunteers. 400 people are needed to help prepare the giant snack. No previous experience is necessary.
