Roof of Fischerinsel party boat collapses: Police investigate negligent bodily harm

According to reports, police and the fire brigade were called at around 21:20 on Tuesday after the metal roof of the boat collapsed. Of the 120 people on board, a total of nine women (aged between 22 and 30), and three men (aged 24, 26 and 31) were injured. According to police, two of the women were taken to hospital, and a rescue helicopter was deployed. Several injured people were also treated on-site.

The MS Heimatland, also sometimes referred to as Hosek Contemporary, is a stationary boat permanently docked on the Spree. Located only 500m from Inselbrücke, it’s used to host parties, concerts, performances and art exhibitions. On Tuesday night, it’s believed that people had been standing on the roof of the boat – a common occurrence during events – according to statements made by neighbours. A cursory look at photos of Hosek Contemporary on Google Maps confirms this.

The police investigation will examine if the roof was actually load-bearing, and whether guests had permission to be on it. Police are also investigating suspicion of negligent bodily harm against the owners of the boat.
