Fire in Berlin S-Bahn disrupts train service: Woman accused of arson

A blaze engulfed an S7 train near Bellevue Station in Berlin on Wednesday morning, leading to severe disruptions in train service. Authorities have arrested a 63-year-old woman on suspicion of arson after she allegedly smoked inside the train.

The fire ignited two seating areas and a section of the ceiling, forcing around 120 passengers to evacuate safely with assistance from train staff and police. While there were no injuries among passengers, the train operators were treated in hospital for possible smoke inhalation.

Berlin’s fire department responded with 90 personnel and 30 vehicles to contain the fire, which caused significant delays and cancellations on the S-Bahn network, particularly between Friedrichstraße and Tiergarten. While most services resumed by afternoon, minor disruptions on the S3, S5, S7, and S9 lines continued.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, with the arrested woman facing charges of aggravated arson.
