Two massive brawls break out on Mehringplatz over the weekend
According to police, large fights between two family groups erupted on Kreuzberg’s Mehringplatz over the weekend. Police will now be patrolling the area more regularly.
The first incident took place on Friday evening, and started when an argument between a 33-year-old man and several unknown figures escalated, with another man reportedly firing blanks and threatening people. A fight then broke out involving about 20 people, in which an unknown figure stabbed the 33-year-old man in the back. He was quickly rushed to hospital, and 3 other men were also reported to have suffered knife wounds.
At around 5pm on Saturday evening, a second violent incident took place at the same location when a group of about 20 men armed with metal bars, wooden slats and pepper spray began arguing with several youths on the square. When police officers arrived on the scene both groups initially dispersed, but shortly afterwards a massive brawl broke out, involving some 70 individuals.
Police returned to Mehringplatz to break up the fight. Although no further serious injuries were reported to the police, a criminal investigation is currently underway.
