A drone defence centre will open in Berlin today at 1 pm. The Joint Drone Defence Centre intends to network the federal security authorities, the federal police and the Bundeswehr for a quick and effective response to safety-relevant drone incidents.

It is linked to the Federal Police Directorate 11 in Berlin. The focus is on the protection of airports, Bundeswehr locations and energy supplies to prevent espionage, sabotage, the disruption of air traffic and defence against possible attacks.

Drone defence was a main topic of discussion at the conference of interior ministers in early December. The federal government has stated that drone sightings at important facilities in Germany have increased sharply since the beginning of the war in Ukraine.

According to the Bundesverband der Deutschen Luft und Raumfahrtindustrie (German Aerospace Industries Association) manufacturers of systems for the detection and defence of unmanned missiles have recently recorded a noticeably higher demand. BDLI Managing Director Marie-Christine von Hahn stated, “Politicians have recognised the growing danger of illegal drone flights and are now taking action.”
