Double strike: Major disruption expected on Deutsche Bahn and Lufthansa travel
Hundreds of thousands of travellers should expect massive restrictions on long-distance travel between Thursday and Saturday, with unions at both Deutsche Bahn and Lufthansa going on strike, according to reports from rbb.
On Monday, the train drivers’ union GDL called on members to stop work on all passenger transport at 2am on Thursday. The strike is expected to last 35 hours.
According to the head of GDL, this will be followed by so-called “Wellenstreiks” (or “wave strikes”), in which work will be halted at any time without warning. Until now, the GDL has always announced its strikes 48 hours in advance.
As for air travel, more than 200,000 Lufthansa passengers are expected to be affected by the upcoming strike, which will begin at 4am on Thursday. The service union Verdi, which represents workers of the German airline, warn travellers to prepare for cancellations and delays until 7am on Saturday.
According to a statement made from VBB, the Berlin S-Bahn will also be severely affected between 2am on Thursday and 1pm on Friday, and passengers are being asked to use alternative means of transport. While BVG travel won’t be directly affected, passengers should still prepare for fuller vehicles and longer waiting times.
