As it stands, Die Linke is the leading party in Berlin. The CDU, however, is gaining ground. After Kai Wegner’s decision not to run for reelection, the party’s new candidate, Stephan Evers, has seen the CDU’s popularity rise to a firm 20%. This sees them sitting just behind Die Linke, who stand at 22% in a BerlinTrend survey carried out by infratest dimap.
According to the survey, 77% of people surveyed approved of Kai Wegner stepping away from the election. The CDU are quickly being rewarded for bringing in Evers. They previously plummeted to fourth place following criticism of Kai Wegner’s inaccurate statements regarding his communication on the first day of the power outage in January. The survey also showed that 76% of CDU supporters approve of the change in the lead candidate. Support is even higher among supporters of other parties.
Twenty-three percent would prefer the Senate to be led by the Die Linke, 19% by the CDU, 16% by the AfD, 15% by the SPD and only 13% want to be led by the Greens. Just under half (49%) are already certain about their voting decision. For the BerlinTrend survey, 1,147 Berliners were interviewed between July 13 and 15.
