Deutsche Wohnen: Dispute over millions in data protection fines continues

A legal dispute against the controversial real estate group Deutsche Wohnen SE regarding a million-euro fine over a data protection breach has been brought back to court, as reported by Berliner Zeitung.

At the centre of the case are questions around what kind of data real estate companies are allowed to store on their tenants. Specifically, the Berlin data protection authority is accusing Deutsche Wohnen of failing to regularly delete tenant data that it no longer needed. Lawyers from the Deutsche Wohnen company, which has been part of Vonovia real estate group since 2021, are preparing for a lengthy legal process.

Back in 2019, a similar case involving fines of 14.5 million euros for the violation of the General Data Protection Regulation was issued against Deutsche Wohnen, eventually making its way to the European Court of Justice (ECJ). For now though, it’s still unclear whether or not this more recent case will reach the ECJ.
