In September, the Berlin Senate announced a new name for Hofjägerallee, the road that runs from the Siegessäule through Tiergarten towards the CDU Federal Office. Now, a schedule for replacing the signposting has been fixed and a date has been set: May 9, 2026.

The street will be named after Helmut Kohl (CDU), Chancellor of the Federal Republic from 1982 to 1998. The Senate has been looking for a way to remember the ex-chancellor since 2023, when Berlin’s governing parties, the CDU and SPD, agreed in the coalition agreement to name a street or square after Kohl.

An official document released by the district office states that the renaming will show an appreciation of Kohl’s services “to the democratic community”.

The renaming will be formally announced in two weeks, after which it can be appealed for one month. This seems unlikely, however, as the street has no residents who might be affected by the change.

Like the recent renaming of Mohrenstraße to Anton-Wilhelm-Arno-Straße, the signs of Hofjägerallee will remain visible for half a year after the change to avoid confusion and allow orientation for those navigating the city.
