Car-bomb in Schöneberg: Homicide squad investigates

At 1:30 in the morning, on the usually quiet Schöneberg street of Ebersstraße, a powerful explosion ripped through a parked BMW, seriously injuring one person. The Berlin homicide squad has launched an investigation, with police suspecting a targeted attack.

The victim, a 22-year-old man, was rushed to hospital. His life is not believed to be in danger. According to B.Z., he is related to the owner of the vehicle and was apparently running towards the car when it exploded. Debris was hurled several metres into the air, and the blast was so strong that a window at the nearby Feuerwache Feurigstrasse fire station cracked. The BMW’s window was blown about ten metres from the car.

The motive remains unclear. Investigators say there is no evidence of a political background, nor any apparent link to organised crime.

Forensic teams are still at the scene, securing evidence. They are being assisted by the criminal police (KLA) and the Analytics Task Force (ATF), a specialist unit for chemical, biological and radiological incidents, equipped with advanced measuring tools.
