Opening of Berlin Modern has been pushed back by a year
Friday, October 17
The opening date of Berlin’s new museum for artwork from the 20th century has been pushed back from 2028 to 2029, according to the Prussian cultural heritage foundation (SPK). The new museum, which will be called Berlin Modern, is being built close to Potsdamer Platz and will expand the Neue Nationalgalerie. Around six years after first breaking ground, the topping-out ceremony will be celebrated this Friday.
The total costs for the building are currently estimated at €507 million. This estimation has actually decreased, with a recent report from the Bundestag’s budget committee estimating the cost at around €526.5 million. Both of these figures are still a big increase on the the initial estimate of around €200 million.
Federal Minister of State for Culture Wolfram Weimer described the museum as the “most important federal cultural building project” and “one of the most spectacular structures in the European cultural landscape.” Weimer added that “the building carries with it the hope and expectation that the unique collection of the Neue Nationalgalerie will receive a new, magnificent and transparent second home.”
