Denmark has unveiled DestinationPay, a global tourism scheme that rewards tourists for making sustainable choices. The organisation Wonderful Copenhagen declared that, along with more than 100 destinations, Berlin has signalled an interest in the programme.
Inspired by Denmark’s award-winning CopenPay, the initiative tailored to the German capital would be called BerlinPay. Under this model, since 2024, Copenhagen has rewarded visitors for taking simple positive actions that benefit local communities.
Those who travel to Copenhagen by train can rent free bicycles or receive reduced entrance fees to some of the city’s largest attractions. In consideration of the environmental impact of travel, including flights and the consumption of packaged food, a similar model in Berlin would encourage tourists to travel more sustainably.
For example, those who bike or use the subway during their visit, or even collect rubbish in parks, could earn cultural experiences or free drinks. Plans are in place to potentially launch BerlinPay next summer.
