Berlin named “City of the Year” in Food and Travel Awards
Every year, Food and Travel Magazine gives an award to one city in order to recognise the cultural and culinary diversity of its cuisine. This year, Berlin has taken the honour, claiming the prize against rival nominees such as Bordeaux, Cape Town, Dubrovnik, Girona, Seoul, Sydney, Tokyo and Zurich.
Berliner Zeitung quotes Burkard Kieker, the spokesperson for the travel portal visitBerlin, who expressed his pleasure at the award: “We are delighted with the readers’ recognition of Berlin’s creative scene. The title shows that food has now become a real reason for travel.”
In addition to this prize, the magazine also names “long-haul” and “short-haul” destinations of the year. Those prizes went to South Africa and Spain, respectively.
South Africa and Berlin seem to be vying against each other frequently for these kinds of awards. Back in March, Oranienstraße in Kreuzberg was named by Time Out as one of “the world’s 30 coolest streets” alongside Bree Street in Cape Town.
