Berlin man sentenced to six years in prison for throwing e-scooter from bridge

The incident took place back in June, when a man on the Gensinger Bridge in Friedrichsfelde picked up up a 28-kilogram e-scooter and hurled it down from the overpass onto the road beneath, narrowly missing an oncoming car. Apparently, his action were motivated by nothing more than annoyance at the fact that the electric vehicles were lying in his path, blocking the way.

According to the investigation, the driver on the road below was only able to avoid a collision with the falling object by breaking sharply and swerving. A court has now found the scooter-slinging man guilty of attempted murder and dangerous inference with traffic, meaning a likely sentence of six years and nine months in prison.

The 44-year-old suspect was not arrested immediately, but was only discovered two weeks after the incident took place after being identified through the analysis of DNA traces on the vehicle. The man – a trained bricklayer, though unemployed at the time of the incident – already has a criminal record. His lawyer argued that he should receive a suspended sentence, pointing out that he has since shown remorse, that he had consumed drugs earlier that day and was in a desolate psychological state.
