Best airport in Europe? BER wins unlikely honour

To say that the construction of Berlin-Brandenburg airport was a fiasco is putting it mildly. Originally scheduled to open in 2011, it was hit with successive delays due to poor construction planning, execution and management and several corruption and bribery scandals. Understandable, then, that it has not had a great reputation in the city since it finally opened – nine years late and hugely over budget – in 2020, a whole 14 years after the initial construction started.

But perhaps the fortunes of this unfortunate airport are changing? A new ranking by the British travel portal Eurochange has judged Berlin’s airport as the best in Europe, scoring 79.5 from 100 possible points. In particular, they praised it for being child-friendly.

Among its laudatory features, the magazine mentioned that 80% of the flights are on time, and that passengers wait on average just seven minutes to pass through security. They also noted its large play area for children, and assessed factors such as the number of shops and price of a beer. Behind BER airport in second, third and fourth place in the rankings were the airports of Munich, Brussels and Hamburg.
