Obama had dinner in Schöneberg last night, in town till Thursday
On Tuesday evening, at an Italian restaurant on a residential street in Schöneberg, two former colleagues met for dinner: ex-President Barack Obama and the previous German Chancellor Angela Merkel. In fact, Obama is in town for a few days. He’s having lunch with current Chancellor Olaf Scholz today and then giving a talk at the Mercedes-Benz Arena this evening.

Obama actually knows the city pretty well: this is his fifth visit to Berlin. During their shared time in office, the former President often spoke warmly about Angela Merkel and the pair are reportedly good friends. As a rule, ex-Presidents require some serious security, and Obama’s motorcade was accompanied last night by the police, the US Secret Service and Germany’s tactical unit the SEK. He arrived at the Schöneberg restaurant Ponte at 19:00 where Angela Merkel and her husband Joachim Sauer welcomed him. The group only left the restaurant shortly after 22:30.
Sadly for Obama, he’s not yet sold out his talk tonight. Maybe he should think about lowering those prices: cheaper tickets are just over €60, while the more expensive seats cost as much as €390. For those prices, you could enjoy a good meal and wine even at the sort of fancy restaurant Obama goes to.
