That’s bananas: Police find cocaine in supermarket fruit crates (again!)
How to smuggle 300 kg of cocaine into Berlin? The answer, judging by the example of ten supermarkets in Berlin and four in Brandenburg, is bananas. For the second time in just over a year, police have found a significant quantity of the drug in crates of fruit imported from South and Central America. Which raises another question. Why, once they’ve shipped the drugs in this manner, are they failing to pick it up?
Brandenburg police spokesperson Brigit Kardels told rbb on Tuesday that, although final investigations are still underway, the illicit substance is thought to be 300 kg of cocaine. This represents a significant bust, but not a new phenomenon, since this method of smuggling has been noted previously.
The route taken by large shipments of cocaine generally involves travelling on container ships across the ocean from South America to the European port cities of Antwerp and Rotterdam, before being distributed across Europe.
