Baby giraffe born in front of visitors to Berlin Tierpark

Giraffes give birth standing up, so the calf dropped around two metres to the floor during labour - but they’re in good health.

On Monday, a new Berliner was born in Friedrichsfelde, out in the East of the city: a baby giraffe. Reportedly, numerous visitors were there to witness the birth, during which the infant animal fell more than two metres to the ground due to the fact that giraffes give birth standing up. The giraffe calf was perfectly healthy, though, if still a little wobbly on its feet.

Andreas Knieriem, the director of Berlin’s Tierpark, told rbb that this was a particularly special event “since there are only around 1,400 adult Rothschild giraffes left in their natural habitat.”

At birth, giraffes weigh around 60kg and are around 1.80 metres tall. This animal is the fourth offspring of the mother giraffe Amalka.
