UPDATE: Train strike cancelled

Germany’s train strike which was set to run from Sunday evening until Wednesday morning has been cancelled after the railway and the EVG union reached a last minute agreement in their collective bargaining dispute. For Berlin, this means the S-Bahn, along with regional and long-distance trains *will* now be running, although some journeys nationwide may still be affected.

The union was warned, however, that the walkout is only “suspended for the time” being – as the two parties are still working on a final settlement.

Another train strike incoming: No trains for 50 hours from Sunday

Only on Wednesday will we see the resumption of normal service.

Berlin has experienced two strikes in recent weeks, but this weekend will see another stop in train traffic as the workers’ union EVG down tools across the country for 50 hours from Sunday evening at 22:00 all the way through Monday and Tuesday. This means there will be no S-Bahn, regional or long-distance trains. Since the BVG has a separate collective agreement, the U-Bahn will continue to run, though passengers should expect some spillover from the cancelled services. Only on Wednesday will we see the resumption of normal service.

Customers who’ve bought a train ticket to travel on Deutsche Bahn on Monday or Tuesday can have the full price refunded, but — unlike in previous strikes — it will not be possible to rebook for the days immediately following the strike due to the fact that Thursday May 18 is the Ascension Day bank holiday and trains are already going to be very busy.
