Another day, another transit crisis: 24-hour BVG strike on Monday

Berlin’s public transport is about to hit pause – again. Verdi union is ramping up pressure in its ongoing wage battle with the Berlin transport company, calling for a full-day walkout next Monday (Feb 10). This marks the second strike this year.

Starting at 3 AM on Monday, BVG buses, trams, and U-Bahn lines will likely grind to a halt for 24 hours. Even night buses won’t run from Monday to Tuesday. The S-Bahn, run separately by Deutsche Bahn, will still operate, but expect overcrowding and delays.

So what’s the issue? Money, of course. The BVG has offered a 15.3% pay increase, but stretched out over four years. The union Verdi calls it a “smokescreen”, arguing the deal doesn’t even keep up with inflation. They’re demanding €750 more per month, a 13th salary, and extra shift bonuses.

The BVG calls Verdi’s strike tactics an “escalation at the expense of passengers”, arguing that its offer provides “planning security” for the company’s future. Meanwhile, Verdi insists BVG workers are losing real wages and refuses to budge.

Negotiations resume Tuesday, but if no deal is reached, expect more strikes ahead. Happy commuting!
