Berlin enters the 1990s: Meldebescheinigung now available online

Starting this Wednesday, Berliners will no longer need to turn up in person at the Bürgeramt into order to get the Meldebescheinigung certificate which is the official register of a new address. The bold new era will be ushered in when Berlin’s Chief Digital Officer, Martina Klement, officially makes the system operational at 16:30. The certificate used to cost €10, but it will become free from today.

Last year, Berlin issued around 137,000 such certificatesand this news comes as part of an ongoing attempt by the city to bring itself into the modern age through the Digitalisierung of more of its essential services. But really, a long wait at the Bürgeramt has been part of the Berlin experience for so long, we don’t know what people will do with all that free time (flat hunting, probably).

What’s next, electronic mail?
