“All of Berlin hates the AfD”: Hundreds of thousands demonstrate against far-right

Police put the number of participants at 100,000, while organisers spoke of as many as 350,000 people having headed out on a dark January evening to protest against Germany’s right-wing opposition party, the Alternativ für Deutschland.

These protests weren’t just in Berlin, people took to the streets across the entire country this weekend: Munich, Leipzig, Hamburg, Dresden, Chemnitz and Frankfurt all saw their own demonstrations with over 1 million people making their opinions heard across the country. Behind these public expressions of outrage was the news that the AfD had held secret meetings plotting the deportation or “remigration” of foreigners in Germany. Members of the CDU also partook in the meeting.

Images from Berlin’s demonstrations show the entire space in front of the Reichstag filled with people, singing anti-fascist songs, waving signs and chanting slogans such as: “All of Berlin hates the AfD”.
