Monday morning commutes have been disrupted by a major traffic accident on the A111. The route into the city at Heckerdamm in the direction of Dreieck Charlottenburg is still closed while services repair damages to the road. A spokesman for the Berlin Police stated that the duration of the shutdown is unknown and could continue into this afternoon.

According to the police, the incident happened early Sunday morning. A 79-year-old driver lost control and crashed into a guardrail and then into a road bridge for unknown reasons. The accident happened as he was driving a Mercedes-Benz at around 6:30 am.

It was a paramedic of Berlin’s fire brigade who discovered the accident on her way home from work. When she came across the car on its side, she provided first aid to the victim until emergency services arrived.

To free the man, the fire department had to remove the roof of his car. He was then taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. A rescue helicopter was also at the scene.

With fuel spilled over a large area, a specialist company was called in to remove it. The accident also damaged a road traffic control system, the stability of which could not be guaranteed by the motorway maintenance department. Therefore, a comprehensive test must be carried out before the road can reopen.

Traffic has been diverted via Jakob-Kaiser-Platz, according to the Traffic Information Centre Berlin (VIZ). The motorway police inform drivers to take the Heckedamm exit and return to the A111 on the other side.
