Rave away the motorway: Berlin clubs protest the A100

“Dance and demonstrate for a liveable and climate-friendly city” reads the appeal, which is backed by several Berlin clubs including About Blank, Renate and Else. On September 13, a large-scale rave-demonstration is being organised under the motto “A100 wegbassen” to protest the planned extension of a major Berlin motorway which threatens the future of some of the city’s most beloved nightclubs.

This will be the second year of protests over the planned motorway extension, which is backed by the FDP and the CDU, but opposed by the Greens and DIE LINKE. The proposed new stretch of road is due to be completed in mid-2025, and would lead from Treptower Park across the Spree and through Friedrichshain.

This is particularly controversial because it would mean replacing a number of clubs, cultural sites and green spaces with more room for cars. The appeal continues: “Instead of investing billions in concrete, we should expand public transport, create safe cycle paths and pedestrian zones. This is the only way to make Berlin fit for the future.”

The demonstration is also supported by the Berlin Club Commission, Fridays for Future and various other political initiatives. The meeting point is set to be 17:00 at Markgrafendamm, before it will head over the Elsenbrücke to the planned motorway junction at Treptower Park.
